RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A Rutherford County investigation  led to one man facing several charges after another man was found dead from a stab wound.

According to a release from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, on January 1, 2021, at 9:23 PM, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call to investigate a death at 121 Country Meadows Lane in Forest City.

When deputies arrived, they were met by a female and a male who were the ex-wife and father to the victim. They advised deputies the victim was in the bed covered in blood and was obviously deceased.
 Deputies made entry and located Kevin Keith Biggerstaff, 52, deceased.

Detectives with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office were notified and began an investigation with the help of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

After further investigation, it was determined Biggerstaff died from a stab wound.

Deputies were able to identify a person of interest on scene and after further investigation were able to arrest and charge Steven Brent Mooney Jr. with First Degree Burglary and First Degree Murder.
Mooney was placed in the Rutherford County Detention Center without any bond for the Burglary and Murder charges.

Later on January 2, 2021, Mooney was charged with having a controlled substance in jail and received a $10,000 bond.

More charges are pending on Mooney in relation to the homicide.
