Shelby Jean Wilson, age 82, of Forest City, passed away, Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Shelby was born August 17, 1937 in Rutherford County to the late James David Horton and Stella Mae Bowens Horton. She was a faithful member of Spindale Fellowship Holiness. Shelby was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, craftwork and shopping. She worked as a waitress for several local restaurants and cafes. Shelby loved her family dearly and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, John “Frank” Wilson; son-in-law, David Burgess; brothers, D.G. and Cecil Horton and sisters, Annie Frady and Doris Wilson.

Those left to cherish her memory includes two daughters, Barbara Burgess of Dobbinsville and Norma Reedy (Rodney) of Ellenboro; three grandchildren, Nicole Klepper of Inman, SC, Pamela Phillips (Gary) and Beth Conner of Ellenboro. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Harley Burgess (Brad Pye), Luke Campbell, Jaydha Campbell, Layla Campbell, Camren Klepper and Trenton Klepper; special niece, Charlotte Jowers (Joe); special friends, Joyce and Ken Davis and extended grandchildren, Bryan Hauss (Shannon), Makalyn, Azlyn, Devin, and Jaiden Silvers.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2020 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Chad Sisk and Reverend Buddy Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Cheryl Bridges Smith, age 55, of Ellenboro, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020 at Oak Grove Health Care Center in Rutherfordton.

Cheryl was born September 8, 1964 in Thomasville, NC to Mary Elizabeth Boone Bridges who resides in Rutherfordton and the late Gene Bridges. She worked at Timken Industries in Gaffney for several years and graduated from Cosmetology School at Cleveland Community College. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her family. Cheryl especially loved spending time with her granddaughter.

In addition to her mother, those left to cherish her memory include her son, Shane Teseniar (Karen) of Ellenboro; daughter, Tommy Elaine Smith of Ellenboro; granddaughter, Lacey Elizabeth Smith; brother, Brian Bridges (Angela) of Union Mills and nephew, Austin Bridges. She is also survived by a family of caretakers and special friends at Oak Grove Health Care Center who loved her dearly.

A gathering of family and friends to honor Cheryl’s memory will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Derrick A. Davis, age 34, of Forest City, died Friday, July 3, 2020 at his residence.

Derrick was born August 17, 1985 in Burke County to Herman and Linda Davis who reside in Forest City. He was a talented metal and leather worker and was a handyman who used his skills to help others. He attended The Life Center in Lenoir and was known for his athletic ability during his school years. He loved spending time with his children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Angel Davis; brothers, Sonny Lee Davis, and Ray Eugene Davis; grandparents, Herman and Marie Davis and Leroy and Pearline Doby.

In addition to his loving parents, those left to cherish his memory include five children, Bryson, Mason, Carson, Benson and Keirrah Davis all of the home; five sisters, Linda Morris (James), Thelma Campbell, Camillia Higgins (Rick), Vickie Price (Ricky) all of Burke County and Beverley Conner (Joe) of Lake Lure. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2020 at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Ernie Cole officiating. The family requests that face masks be worn by all attendees.

Sandra Kay Ervin Coffey, 69 of Union Mills passed away July 6, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.  She was the daughter of the late David Ervin and Mary Helen Metcalf.  Sandra worked as a human resource officer at Spindale Mills and Delphi Corp. in Landrum, SC.  Sandra was called “Gaga” by her grandchildren, whom she adored.  She also had a passion for reading and watching golf.

Left to cherish her memory are her best friend Kermit Arrowood, of the home; her daughter Allyson Galloway and husband Mark of Forest City; a brother Rick Ford and wife Tammy of Florida, and her grandchildren, Madison, Hayden and Anastyn Galloway.

Sandra will be missed by her family and friends.  In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to Rutherford County Library, 225 Callahan Koon Road Spindale, NC 28160.

Linda Kay Hill McClure, age 78, of Rutherfordton, died Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills.

She was the daughter of the late Clark and Mattie Hill and she was a native of Rutherford County. Linda was first married to the late Floyd Hill and she was the widow of the late John McClure.  Linda was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Willie “Billy” Norman Mabe, Jr., age 57 of Forest City, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020 at his residence.

Billy was born March 21, 1963 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia to Cynthia Mabe Keeter who resides in Forest City and the late Willie Mabe, Sr. He worked for Canteen Vending Company in Forest City for many years and enjoyed fishing. Billy was a faithful member and served as a deacon of Robertson Creek Free Will Baptist Church. He was dedicated to his God, his family and to his church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin Mabe Keeter; stepfather, Frank Keeter and a nephew, Daniel Mabe.

Besides his mother, those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of thirty-six years, Tammy Sisk Mabe; son, Jordan Mabe (Yvonne) of Forest City; brother, Michael Mabe (Lisa) of Forest City; sister, Laurie Moore (David) of Forest City; sister-in-law, Lynn Cox (Tim) of Forest City; brother-in-law, James Sisk of Greensboro; stepsisters, Sondra Terry and Donna Vassey; stepbrothers, Scott Keeter, Danny Keeter, Mike Keeter and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Robertson Creek Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Colby Davis. The eulogy will be given by James Sisk. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church. The family requests that masks be required by all who attend.

Paulette Griffin Mintz, age 82, of Cliffside, was ushered into heaven on the morning of Monday, July 6, 2020 while being surrounded by her loving family.

Paulette was born February 8, 1938 in Cherokee County, SC to the late Sam Griffin and Rosa McCraw Griffin. She worked for Cone Mills-Cliffside Plant and for many years as a supervisor at Cliffside Hosiery. She was a member of Race Path Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, and watching birds from her front porch rocking chair. Paulette was an Elvis fan and loved having “Polka” Music nights with her family. She was known for her generous and loving heart toward others. She was loved by many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-two years, Knox Mintz; daughter, Evelyn Lee; siblings, Francis Greene, Sammie Griffin, Barney Griffin, Sam Griffin, Ernest Griffin, Rozell Gallman, Ellen Wilson, Maire Parker and Madelina “Maggie” Griffin.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughters, Ellen Radford (David) of Mooresboro, Melissa Hawkins (Nigel) of Caroleen and Ruby Arrowood (Shannon) of Forest City; grandchildren, Amanda Sherbert (Chris) of Shelby, Brooklyn Radford of Henrietta, Adam Arrowood, Joshua Arrowood, Stephen Arrowood, Lydia Arrowood and Jacob Arrowood all of Forest City; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Addison, Joseph and Brodie. She is also survived by brother, Marshall “Buck” Griffin of Gaffney; sister, Margie Scruggs of Mayo, SC; a special sister-in-law, Evelyn Swanson of Belmont, NC; her beloved fur baby, Emma Lou Mintz and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Camp’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Andy Oliver, and Chaplain Cy Miller officiating. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 pm on Wednesday. The family requests that masks been worn at the graveside service.

Clyde Junior Hodge, 77, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on July 3rd, 2020 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, after a several year battle with IPF and cancer.

Clyde was born October 27, 1942 in Rutherfordton to the late Clyde Martin Hodge and Ruth Peterson Hodge and was preceded in death by his younger brother, Donald Hodge. Early on, Clyde displayed a passion for flying, becoming one of the youngest Captains in the history of Eastern Airlines where he flew the Lockheed Constellation and Boeing 727. Following retirement, Clyde ran a successful chain of video rental stores in the area under the Video Outlet banner. He was still an avid aviator, enjoying his Pitts Specials and Ultralight planes and in his later years, he could be found in his yard or at the beach flying his drones.

Clyde’s passion for adventure was only surpassed by his love for his wife and surviving partner of almost 59 years, Carole Kornacki Hodge. Those left to cherish his memory include son, Robert W. Hodge and wife Donna Hodge of Charlotte, NC, daughter, Ruth H. Bowers and fiancé, Don Pollard of Morganton, NC,  daughter, Lynnette H. Martin and husband Scott D. Martin of Rutherfordton, NC, son John M. Hodge and wife Kelly B. Hodge of Inman, SC, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

The entire family rejoices that Clyde has entered God’s kingdom joined by his parents, brother Donnie, grandson Drew Bowers, and his many favorite dogs in heaven’s grace and peace.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7th, 2020 at Piedmont Baptist Church cemetery in Rutherfordton with Reverend Everette Chapman of Fairfield Mountains Chapel officiating. Mrs. Linda Waters Ledford, 65, of Rutherfordton, died Monday, July 6, 2020 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

Linda was the daughter of the late Fred and Bell Waters, and was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Bonnie Spivey, Diane Stimson, and Doris Faires; and 3 brothers, Bob Waters, Alfred Waters, and Bill Waters. Linda had worked at Stonecutter years ago.

She is survived by her husband, James Ledford; her son, Brandon Ledford of Rutherfordton; her brothers, Larry Waters and his wife Mary, of Sunshine, and Don Waters and his wife Linda, of Sherrills Ford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Private burial will be held at Piney Knob Baptist Church Cemetery.
