Roger Nelson Taylor, age 61, of Rutherfordton, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Atrium Health-Cleveland.

Roger was born March 7, 1959 in Rutherford County to the late Earl Ray Taylor and Helen Camp Taylor. He worked for Broyhill and Stonecutter Mills for many years and was a member of West Point Baptist Church. He enjoyed hiking along the local rivers, fishing, hunting, farming and raising chickens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Taylor Campbell.

Those left to cherish his memory, include his son, Brian Taylor (Amanda) of Forest City; two brothers, Earl Ray Taylor, Jr. (Rhonda) and Bobby Eugene Taylor; granddaughter, Presley Jade Taylor; nieces, Heather Taylor and Melissa Campbell Edwards; nephew, Jason Earl Taylor (Jennifer); four great nieces and three great nephews.

A service to honor Roger’s life will be conducted at a later date and will be announced by the funeral home.

Kent Shytles, age 62, of Forest City, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at his residence.

Kent was born June 1, 1958 in Rutherford County to the late Frank “Chunk” Shytles and Amelia Putman Shytles. He was a graduate of East Rutherford High School, class of 1976 and a member of Florence Baptist Church. Kent worked for Broyhill for several years and for CSX Railroad for twenty-seven years. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and North Carolina Tar Heel fan. Kent also enjoyed going to dirt track races and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Curt Shytles.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Amber Shytles Whitaker (Michael) of Forest City; brother, Kyle Shytles of Forest City; granddaughters, Blakeley and Brenlie Whitaker; sister-in-law, Connie Shytles of Ellenboro; niece, Summer Shytles  and nephew, Charlie Bumgarner both of Forest City and an uncle, B.L. Putman (Peggy) of Norfolk, Virginia.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Bobby Gantt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Michael Gene Green, 62, of Bostic, died Thursday, October 29, 2020.

Mike was the son of Guynell Green of Bostic and the late Gene Green. He was a Mason and attended Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Janie Green; his daughters, Lacey Pope and husband Coy, and Victoria Harrison and husband Dylan; his 2 sisters, Susan Crowe and LuAnn Swink and husband Jeff; his 2 brothers, Larry Green, and Scott Green and wife Darlene; and his grandson Jake, all of Bostic.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 pm Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Cooper Springs Congregational Holiness Church Cemetery. The Rev. Paul White, Jr. and George Smith will officiate.

Grace Elizabeth Lewis Nodine, age 87, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late Pearlie Mae Lewis and she was a native of Rutherford County.
Grace was the widow of the late Robert Nodine Sr. She was a  member of West Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband Grace was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Nodine, one daughter, Charlotte Patricia Whitaker, two sisters, Marie Martin and Earlene Honeycut, and two brothers, David Lewis, and Charles Lewis.

She is survived by

Letha M. Scruggs, age 70, of Spindale, NC, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at Willow Ridge Rehabilitation & Living Center.

She was the daughter of the late Everett and Edith Mathis and she was a native of Rutherford County. Letha was the widow of the late Ronnie Scruggs. She was a member of Second Baptist Church of Rutherfordton. In addition to her parents and husband Letha was preceded in death by one brother, Spencer Lovelace of Raleigh.

Hessie Lawter Tipton, age 70, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late William Lawter and Emma Hicks and she was a native of Rutherford County. Hessie was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband: Wade Tipton.

Clarence “Brint” Lavender, age 83, of Ellenboro, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Atrium Health-Cleveland.

Brint was born January 22, 1937 in Rutherford County to the late Charles Lavender and Ada Price Lavender. He was a graduate of Ellenboro High School, class of 1955. He worked as a carpenter most of his life and played an integral part in the construction of many local structures. He was a past member of Corinth Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Southern Gospel Concerts with his wife. Brint was an excellent woodworker and was creative in his skill. He loved riding motorcycles and especially spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and a brother.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-two years, Barbara Lavender; son, Dale Lavender (Donna) of Shelby; sister, Sue McKeithan of Bostic and four grandchildren.

To honor his wishes, no formal services will be conducted.

Manley “Miles” H. Kennedy, age 85, of Henrietta, passed away, Thursday, August 20, 2020 at his residence.

Manley was born May 21, 1935 in Rutherford County to the late Grayson R. Kennedy and Annie Lou Vickers Kennedy. He was a graduate of Tri-High School, class of 1953 and worked for Reeves Brothers Mill for many years. He enjoyed working on tractors and cars and was an avid reader.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an uncle, Milas Kennedy.

Manley was survived by his caretakers and life-long friends, Richard and Charles Dysart of Henrietta.

No formal services were conducted.

Michael “Mike” David Key, age 73, of Rutherfordton, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC.

Mike was a member of Gilkey United  Methodist Church.  He was the son of the late Claude & Valeria Belle Key and a native of North Wilkesboro. Mike was a U S Army veteran where he was stationed in Korea from 1966 to 1968 and received a Purple Heart Medal. He and Dorothy lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for many years.  He is preceded in death by 2 brothers Neal Key and Ralph Key and 1 sister Brenda Chandler.

Survivors include: his loving wife Dorothy Thompson Key.

One Daughter:
Michelle Patricia Surran and her  husband Peter.  One granddaughter; Autumn Rose Surran.

The Graveside  service will be at Gilkey United Methodist Church  Cemetery at 2:00 PM, Friday, October 30, 2020 with Reverend Peter Surran officiating.

Interment will be at Gilkey United Methodist Church  Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
