Steven Thomas Brooks, age 45, of Cowpens, was taken away from his loved ones too soon on Sunday, December 13, 2020 due to a tragic accident.

     Steven was born April 15, 1975 in South Chicago Heights, Illinois to the late Steve Brooks and Sheryl Donnelly Brooks. He worked as a crew member for McDonalds for many years. Steven was an avid World of Warcraft Gamer and a journeyman astronomer who enjoyed studying the stars and planets.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Ronnie Murray and great niece, Anna Brooks.

     Those left to cherish his memory include his two sisters, Mary Brooks (Robert Moore) and Rosalie Brooks Murray all of Mooresboro; daughter, Jessica Brooks Grubbs; granddaughter, Alice Grubbs; three nephews, Wes Leverett (Olivia), Joshua Jackson, Dominick Jackson; two nieces, Katelynn Brooks (Zach) and Aaliyah Jackson; great nephews, Hayden Riddle, Conner Riddle, Brian Brooks and great niece, Aubree Bradford.

     A gathering of family and friends will be conducted from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Harrelson Funeral Home with Reverend Dale Dubois leading a time of remembrance.

Gene Roper, Sr., age 78, of Union Mills, passed away Monday, December 14, 2020 at his residence.

Gene was born August 1, 1942 in Rutherford County to the late Joseph Howard Roper and Janie Barrett Roper. He was a faithful and active member of the First Wesleyan Church in Forest City. Gene worked as a Carpenter/Handyman in construction most of his life. He enjoyed working outdoors and gardening.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Roper.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Crystal Roper Burgess (Brian) of Forest City; son, Robert Gene Roper, Jr. (Melissa) of Bostic; two brothers, Charles Roper (Carol) of Rutherfordton and Mike Johnson (Christy) of Forest City and a sister, Carol Jones of Forest City. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brandon Hawkins, Morgan Henson (Adam), Magan Roper, Shawn Roper, Ryan Roper, Ritchie Burgess and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the First Wesleyan Church in Forest City with Reverend Eric Yelton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the First Wesleyan Church, 700 S. Church Street, Forest City, NC  28043.

Mrs. Millie Jean “Mickey” Deese Hennessee, 87, of Bostic, died Monday, December 14, 2020.

She was the widow of Earl E. Hennessee and a daughter of the late Claude and Annie Hall Deese. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Homer Deese, Margaret Ray, Paul Deese, Gaynell Parker, Revonda Conner, Wallace Deese, and Norman Deese.

Mickey had retired from Doncaster-Tanner. She was a very active member of Salem United Methodist Church, where she did the card ministry, many chicken pie suppers and vacation Bible school, and had perfect attendance for 9 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Kim Hennessee and Shannon Henson, both of Bostic; her son, Kelly Hennessee of Charlotte; her 3 grandchildren, Chad Phillips, Ashley Philbeck, and Ansley Parker; and her great grandson, Brady Parker.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Sam Burleson will officiate.

Mr. Steve “Pete” Roberson, 63, of Forest City, died Thursday, December 10, 2020.

He was the widower of Diane Brigman Roberson, and was the son of the late Tom and Irene Queen Roberson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Clevie Roberson.

Steve was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, and had worked at Stonecutter for 23 years and Milliken for 13 years. He was a avid dirt track racing fan.

He is survived by his son, Dale Roberson of Rutherfordton; his daughter, Heather Wright and her husband Jody, of Forest City; his sister, Lessie Whelchel of Bostic, and Jessie Pearson of Morganton; a daughter-in-law, Beth Roberson of Ellenboro; there are 3 grandchildren, Miranda Roberson, Ethan Roberson, and Olivia Wright.

The Funeral will be conducted at 1:00 pm Wednesday(PLEASE NOTE RESCHEDULED TIME OF 1 pm DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS), December 16, 2020 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. The Rev. Steven Cooper and Rev. Robert Bradley will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Kyle Smith, Rodney Riles, Arthur Pearson, Avery Rhodes, Jeremy Toney, and Timmy Brigman.
The Visitation will be from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm Tuesday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service.

Russell A. Collins, age 70, of Forest City, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

    Russell was born January 27, 1950 in Spartanburg County, SC to the late Allen I. Collins and Alice Stacy Collins. He was a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School, class of 1968. He worked for Trelleborg Industries for twenty-seven years. Russell enjoyed bowling and especially loved playing with his grandkids.

     Those left to cherish his memory include his life-companion and friend, Sharon Porter; sister, Phyllis West (Roger) of Polk County; son, Samuel Collins (Miranda) of Inman, SC and a daughter, Stacy Bowman (Christopher) of Rockingham, NC. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Amber Rutherford (Charles) of Kings Mountain, Amanda Selvey of Kings Mountain and Amy Selvey of Clover, NC.

     A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 pm Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Harrelson Funeral Home. Elder Roy Johnston will lead the service.

Kenneth Alvin Harris, age 94, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Monday, December 14, 2020, at Henderson Care Center.

He was the son of the late Grady Alonzo Harris and the late Essie Lillian Jones Harris Smith Conner. Ken was a native of Rutherford County and the widower of the late Laura Mae Harris.  Ken was of the Baptist faith and was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and served in the Philippines.  He was in the first group of soldiers to go ashore after the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

In addition to his parents and wife,  Ken was also preceded in death by one brother, Wallace Alonzo Harris, three sisters, Beatrice Thompson, Hazel Wilson Duncan, and Aileen Reilly.

Survivors include
One Daughter:
Judy Harris and her husband Doug Flack.

Two Sons:
James Harris and his wife Donna.
Keith Harris and his wife Kim

One Brother:
David Smith and his wife Katherine.

Six Grandchildren: Christopher Harris and his wife Jessica, Stephen Harris and his wife Kristen, Tyler Harris, Nicole Struble, Jacob Struble, Allison McDade, and her husband James.
Four Great-Grandchildren:  Penelope Harris, Hunter Harris, Charlotte Harris, and Addison Harris.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Thursday, December 17, 2020 at McMahan’s Funeral Home.

The graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Union Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverend Wayne Toney officiating.

The interment will be at Union Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.

Martha Bailey Hensley of Rutherfordton passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Accordius Health Care. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Rotha B. Hensley.

She is survived by a daughter, Jewel Hensley; two sons, Eric and Vernon Hensley; grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a sister, Rachel Wilkerson of Mississippi.

She was a seamstress for Doncaster and Grindstaffs before working as a floral designer at Caroline’s Flowers in her later years. Gardening and crafting were a few of her favorite hobbies.

Her family and friends will greatly miss her kind heart and sense of humor.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
