Reba Hill Mode, age 85, of Cove Road, Rutherfordton, died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Henderson Care in Forest City.

Reba was born August 4, 1934 in Rutherford County to the late Gaither C. Hill and Annie Whitesides Hill. She worked for Tanner-Doncaster Industries for many years and was a member of Piney Knob Baptist Church. Reba loved flower gardening.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Brittain; five brothers, Willard, Fred, Ralph, Cecil and Carl Hill; three sisters, Wilma Hall, Myrtle Jolley and Minnie Rhodes and one great-grandson, Kyle Orion Brittain.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Don Mode; stepson, Donald Todd Mode (Sissy) of Shelby, stepdaughter, Tammy Pokrajac of Sacramento, California; two grandchildren, Kyle Brittain and Gina Coggins; four great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Piney Knob Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Brown officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.

James R. Smith, age 89, of Ellenboro, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 29, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

James was born July 30, 1930 in Cleveland County, NC to the late James Harvey Smith and Donie Beheler Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and honorably served during the Korean War. James worked as a supervisor for Master Craft for many years and was a longtime active member of Corinth Baptist Church. He loved Southern Gospel music, gardening and canning. James was known for his “World Famous” Peanut Butter Pies.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Evelyn Dobbins Smith and Nellie Padgett Smith; three brothers, Harold, Kenneth and Walter Smith and a sister, Frances Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sisters, Margaret Hamrick of Gastonia and Judy Gordon (Winford) of Caroleen; brother, Charles Smith (Peggy) of Ellenboro; two step-daughters, Shirley Pittman (Bill) of Ellenboro and Glennette Lavender of Rutherfordton; step-son, Dean Greene (Elizabeth) of Matthews, NC; sister-in-law, Linda Smith of Forest City; four step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Corinth Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Conner and Reverend Ad Hopper officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.

First Sergeant, Elbert I. Buff, U.S. Army, Ret., of Ellenboro, passed away Friday, November 29, 2019 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Elbert was born July 9, 1928 in Rutherford County to the late Curtis Sanford Buff and Lottie Edna Stanley Buff. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired after twenty-one years of honorable service with the rank of First Sergeant. Upon his retirement from the military, he became the owner and operator of Elbert Buff Car Sales. Elbert was a longtime member of Hicks Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He also enjoyed building and remodeling houses and working on cars. Elbert was a compassionate person who loved his family and friends dearly. He was “Paw Paw” to many, and his outgoing personality endeared him to all who met him. Elbert truly made an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Mary Lucille Buff; two sons, Joe and Dale Buff; four brothers, Donald, Dewey, Kenneth and Billy Buff and a sister, Mary Buff.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Donna Waters of Ellenboro and Patti Bridges (David) of Bessemer City; son, Matt Buff of Mooresboro; three brothers, C.D. Buff (Ophelia) of Spartanburg, Frank Buff (Wanell) of Boiling Springs, NC and Jimmy Buff (Cindy) of Harris; four sisters, Virginia Scruggs of Spartanburg, Irene Scott of Gaffney, Johnnie Buff of Rutherfordton and Jackie Buff of Rutherfordton; special friends, Sammy and Wendy Hardin of Bostic and Irene Wyatt of Ellenboro. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Travis Laflin officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Ken Flack, age 70 of Rutherfordton NC, passed peacefully the morning of November 29th, 2019 surrounded by family. He is celebrated by wife Lucy, son John of Charlotte, son Patrick and his wife Jamie of Rutherfordton, grandson Jameson Baker, and sister Kathy Cabaniss of Spindale. He is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Thelma Edwards Flack. Ken was a lifelong small business man who loved serving his customers at Spindale Tire and his community. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rutherfordton. Ken was always a vibrant man, witty when the mood struck, supportive and understanding when he sensed it was needed most. He made an indelible mark on all he touched, which made him loved by so many.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday December 4th, 2019 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton, NC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall, following the church service.

Dorothy Peeples Shelton, age 89, of Lake Lure, NC passed away on November 28th 2019 at Mission Hospital. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Harry David Peeples Sr. and Gladys Mary Cook Peeples.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband William Jackson Sr, second husband Sidney Shelton, and a brother Jimmy Peeples. Left to cherish her memory are her children Bill Jackson Jr. (Robin), Lyn Weaver (Michael), Ann Kolpin (Carl), Doug Jackson (Cindy), Scott Jackson (Jackie); grandchildren Bill Jackson III, Karen Parsell, Doug Good, Andy Good, Tara Roebuck, Jim Arthur, Ashley Bates, and Ryan Jackson; many great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; brother Harry Peeples, sister Frances Baumgardner;

Donald Newell Lawing age 86, of Spindale, NC went home to be with the Lord on November 19th 2019. Donald was the son of the late Carl and Isabell Vickers Lawing. Donald was a member of Wilson Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years Mable Lullene Eddings Lawing. Niece Lisa and husband Jody Greene.

Services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday December 2nd 2019 at Crowe’s Mortuary and Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Military honors will be provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
