NEWS FOR RELEASE

The Rutherford County Democrats will host a Congressional Candidate Forum on February 13th, 2020 at 7PM in the Rutherford Democratic Headquarters at 142 West Main Street in Forest City, NC.

For 2020, Rutherford County’s Congressional District has been split into two parts. The Western half of the county including Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, Rutherfordton and ½ of Spindale are in the 11th Congressional District which is currently represented by Mark Meadows. The Eastern part of the county including Henrietta, Caroleen, Cliffside, Forest City, Bostic and ½ of Spindale are now in the 5th Congressional District which is represented by Virginia Fox.

Our Congressional Candidate Forum will feature Democratic Primary candidates for both districts. Each candidate will have 10 minutes to make a presentation about themselves and their program. Following each presentation the public will be able to ask questions of the candidates. Five individuals have filed to run in the primary for the 11th Congressional District. Two candidates have filed to run in the primary for the 5th Congressional District. For the 11th Congressional District Gina Collias, Michael O’Shea, and Steve Woodsmall have committed to attend the Rutherford Congressional Forum. For the 5th Congressional District, David Wilson Brown will be speaking.

The Primary will be held on March 3rd. For a candidate to win the primary outright, they will need to get 30% of the votes cast. In the event that no candidate receives 30% or more of the vote, a runoff between the top 2 candidates will be held 7 weeks after the initial March 3rd primary.
