Back to School Plans

Rutherford County Schools remains deeply committed both to the health and well-being of students, employees, and the broader community and to its mission to prepare all students for lifelong learning in partnership with families and communities.

The Governor’s Office and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), in consultation with the State Board of Education and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, have determined that North Carolina’s public schools will initially reopen under Plan B (moderate social distancing)  for the 2020-2021 school year  in addition to remote learning options.

Rutherford County Schools will reopen on August 17, 2020 for remote learning only until Tuesday, September 8. Absent any additional action by the Board during its meeting on Tuesday, September 1, Rutherford County Schools will make two instructional delivery models available to students beginning on Tuesday, September 8, including a hybrid learning program that features a combination of face-to-face and remote learning and a fully remote learning program that features only remote instruction. While the hybrid learning program will operate with full implementation of all Plan B requirements established by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), the remote learning program will also be available for those families and students who determine that it best serves their individual health, safety, and educational needs and requirements. Reopening our schools for remote learning during those first weeks not only serves an important public health interest, but also provides us adequate time to prepare carefully for the successful delivery of both programs by Tuesday, September 8.

Students and families have the opportunity to indicate the learning program that is most appropriate for their family needs using the online Back to School 2020 Student Intent Form or by calling their school of attendance by 5:00PM Tuesday, July 28, 2020. For full details on both options, please refer to the Back to School 2020 Guide for Families .
