Attorney general launches petition to stop robocalls

RALEIGH, N.C. — Attorney General Josh Stein launched a petition to stop robocalls on Thursday.

Automated telephone calls, which frequently leave a recorded message on behalf of a political party or telemarketing company, have been hitting cellphones hard after years of reaching home phones.

Stein leads a bipartisan effort involving 40 state attorneys general to stop or at least reduce the number of these calls.

In August, people received more than 4.2 billion robocalls, and many were from scammers trying to trick them out of money.

In April, lawmakers introduced the “Truth in Caller ID Act” to ban telemarketers from using fake numbers or names at the state level.
