RUTHERFORDTON, NC – On Monday the Town of Rutherfordton’s Wastewater Collection System discharged approximately 1,325 gallons of untreated wastewater into Cleghorn Creek.
Upon locating the overflow the cause was determined to be sheets, linens, uniforms, and commissary rubbish from the Rutherford County Jail. The items had clogged the 10-inch pipe and caused a backup resulting in the overflow and discharge.
Town Public Works staff removed the items and worked to make repairs to the lines affected. North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Division of Water Resources (DWR) were notified of the event the following day and have reviewed the matter. The Town has also worked with and notified both Rutherford County and the Rutherford County Sherriff’s Office of this incident.
