POLK COUNTY, N.C. — Polk County officials confirm that a human skull along with other bones were found in close proximity off of Howard Gap Road in Saluda. A passerby saw the skull shining from the bottom of an embankment Tuesday.

Sheriff Tim Wright confirmed the deputies collected the remaining skeletal remains late Wednesday morning. They were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus. The county medical examiner or the state medical examiner will render their findings. The clothing near the remains indicate the victim may have been female.

Investigators are communicating to other law enforcement agencies for any related missing persons cases.

The case is being treated as a homicide.
