Polk County Law Enforcement Facility Standoff Ends

COLUMBUS, N.C.— A standoff at the Polk County Law Enforcement Facility ended Sunday morning ended when the suspect shot himself. 

After the suspect in the patrol car was arrested he was driven within the security fence of the Polk County Law Enforcement Facility in Columbus, N.C.  There it was discovered the subject had a gun.

Law enforcement requested that the suspect turn over the weapon, but he refused many times to do so. The suspect then turned the gun on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the Columbus Police Department, Polk County Emergency Management, Cleveland County
Sheriff’s Office, and the Tryon Police Department.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident.
