County Commissioners approve Building Reuse for SSD Designs

RUTHERFORDTON — As previously announced SSD Designs is locating its new manufacturing operation in the former Wilbert Plastics building on Vance Street. According to Tom Johnson of the Economic Development Commission, the company plans to create 24 new jobs with an average salary of 53,000. SSD Designs will be investing $2.2 Million.

The RC Commissioners met Monday to hold a public hearing on appropriating and expending County funds for a building reuse project. This program issues forgivable loans if the number of jobs created and other commitments are met. A five percent local match of fund has already been approved by the Town of Forest City and Rutherford County.

The Commissioners passed a resolution authorizing the County Manager to complete and submit a Building Reuse and Restoration Program grant application in an amount up to $300,000.

SSD Designs will recycle various plastic materials that would otherwise go to a landfill. Their products will be modified for reuse by the original company or be purchased by other companies.

Rutherford County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bryan King said, “I am extremely pleased that SSD Designs is re-purposing a vacant building, providing excellent wages, and investing not only in its business but in our community as well.”
