Obituaries

Don Fauntleroy Doggett, 93, of Marion, NC passed away Friday, August 31, 2018. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Della Vickers Doggett. He was a carpenter and a 32nd Degree Mason. Don was a US Army veteran of WWII and a POW. He was loved as if a member of First Baptist Church of Marion.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Juanita Doggett and Margaret Stevens and husband Randy; grandson Jamie Stevens and wife Kasey; great granddaughter Lillie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys B. Doggett and brothers, Spence Doggett and Walton Doggett.

Graveside services will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1565 Oakland Road, Forest City, NC with Pastor Jerry Lewis officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 11 AM at Crowe’s Mortuary, 118 College Avenue Rutherfordton.

Flowers are welcomed and contributions are requested to McDowell County Chamber of Commerce LINC High School Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church of Marion Bus Fund, or Grace Community Church Building Fund.

Curtis Lee Culbreth age 60 of Rutherfordton, NC passed away at his home on August 30th 2018. Curtis was the son of the late Johnny Roy Culbreth, and Nellie Sue Jenkins Culbreth. Left to cherish his memory is his sister Doris Waters. In addition to his parents Curtis was preceded in death by his brother Jimmy Roy Culbreth. Curtis was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Mill Spring, NC. Services will be private.


Cathy Hipp England, age 50, of Barbara Street, Forest City, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Born September 29, 1967 in Haywood County, NC, she is the daughter of Patsy Waters Hipp who resides in Rutherfordton and the late Albert Hipp.  She was a graduate of East Rutherford High School, class of 1985 and worked as a cashier in retail sales for many years. Cathy was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed shopping. Cathy’s family was her priority along with helping her neighbors.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Terrell Hipp.

Besides her mother, she is survived by two sons, Rusty England of Polk County and Holden Hipp (Jessica) of Forest City; two sisters, Patricia Hipp of Morristown, Tennessee and Mary Jane Capp of Hendersonville; two brothers, Ray Hipp of Rutherfordton and Mike Hipp of Hendersonville. She is also survived by four granddaughters, London Alexander, Charlie Hipp, Iris England, Kylee England and several nieces and nephews.


Lee Ledbetter, age 79, of Rutherfordton, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 due to a machinery accident.

Born May 24, 1939 in Buncombe County, he was a son to the late Rector Ledbetter and Gladys Bullock Ledbetter. Lee owned and operated Land Works Grading LLC for over thirty years. He and his wife, Betty, are the founding members of the local Chamber-Made Ministries, Inc. which is part of the Glory of Zion Ministry in Corinth, Texas. Lee loved gardening, farming and collecting tractors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Braswell and Joy McKenzie-Hardisty; two brothers, Guy Ledbetter, Neil Ledbetter and two uncles, Howard and James Hendrix.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of almost thirty five years, Betty K. Ledbetter; son, Joseph Lewis and wife, Lindsay of Columbus, NC; mother-in-law, Barbara J. Kinsman of Rutherfordton; four siblings, Carol Miller (Bob) of Traveler’s Rest, SC, Wayne Ledbetter (Lynn) of Black Mountain, Don Ledbetter (Jan) of Black Mountain and Jannelle Martin (Al) of Hendersonville. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Abigail Lewis and Ian Lewis.

A memorial service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Annette Hendrix, age 76, of Tanners Grove Road, Forest City, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Born June 16, 1942 in Rutherford County, she was a daughter to the late Theodore Johnson and Mattie Goode Johnson. Annette worked for Broyhill Mfg., Master Craft and Stonecutter Mills for many years. Most recently she was a custodian at R-S Central High School. She was the last living charter member of Danieltown Baptist Church and was the founder and a participant of the Forest City Cloggers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Funderburke, Mary Sue Ford, Virginia Morgan and two brothers, William Johnson and Edward Johnson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of fifty-six years, Garland Hendrix; daughter, Tammy Anderson and husband, Tony of Forest City; two brothers, Gary Johnson and wife, Peggy of Harris and Doug Johnson and wife, Donice of Cliffside; one sister, Rita Helton and husband, Hicks of Cliffside. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Blair Anderson and three great grandchildren, Hadley Deviney, Rylee Deviney and Harper Anderson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Creighton Lovelace officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside. At other times they will be gathered at 141 Brookridge Drive, Forest City.


Tony Stamper, age 63, of Mooresboro, NC, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the Hospice Unit at Charles George Veterans Hospital in Asheville.

Born July 25, 1955 in Davidson County, NC, he was the son of the late Glenn D. Stamper and Odessa Smith Stamper. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Tony enjoyed watching sports, doing laundry and drinking coffee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Claudia.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Wright and husband, Jon of Ellenboro and Kacey Lee and husband, Jason of Bostic; two sons, Stacey Stamper and Toby Stamper both of Pickens, SC; three sisters, Glenda, Carol and Darlene; two brothers, Pete and Melvin. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Aaron Wright, Hannah Wright, Katlyn Wright, Jeremy Anderson and Valery Lee.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Paul Willis officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will take place at noon on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in the Western Carolina Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain.

Henry Jace Lee Atkins, infant son of Kierston Atkins of Mooresboro went home to be with his heavenly Father on Thursday, August 23, 2018.

He was born June 21, 2018 and even though his life on earth was brief, he touched the hearts of many people. He was one of God’s precious children and is now one of His little angels. Henry will be forever loved by his mother and family members.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a half-brother, Kaidyn Gregory; grandmother, Misty Ensley of Rutherfordton; great-grandparents, Arlen Atkins of Henrietta and Wayne Johnson also of Henrietta; aunt, Makaliah Atkins of Henrietta; uncle, Dameion Atkins of Forest City; Nana, Bobbie Ross of Mooresboro; two great uncles, Jason Johnson of Henrietta and Chris Johnson of Virginia; two great aunts, Melanie Johnson of Henrietta and Ellen Smith of Forest City. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Carolyn Johnson.


Kyelyn George Fite, infant son of Chris and Jessica Yelton Fite of Forest City, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center. His memory will be cherished by his parents and by those who awaited his arrival.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Vincent and Maddox Fite; maternal grandmother, Cynthia Yelton of Bostic; paternal grandparents, Debbie Cofer and husband, Robbie of Mooresboro and Arthur Fite of Gastonia. He is also survived by two aunts and three uncles. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Fite and maternal grandfather, Eddie Yelton.

No formal services will be conducted.
