CASAR – Joe Harrison McFarland “Joe Cool”, age 63, a native of Cleveland County, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 at Atrium – Cleveland surrounded by his loving family. He was born to the late William Plato and Mary Aileen Brackett McFarland in Shelby.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 4:00 PM at Robert Morgan Funeral and Cremation Service, LLC, 132 East College Avenue, Shelby. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert Morgan Funeral and Cremation Service, LLC of Boiling Springs, NC.


Mr. Thomas Albert Carter, 75, of Bostic, died Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Oak Grove Health Care Center.
Thomas was the son of  the late Hasten and Delores Wright Carter, and was also preceded in death by a brother, James “Smiley” Carter. Thomas was a dedicated member of Walls Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, and was a former choir director.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Poteat Carter; his son, Mark Carter and wife Lisa, of Bostic; his sister, Mattie Green of Bostic; his brother, Joe Carter and wife Jean, of Cliffside; there are 2 grandchildren, Blake and Jenna Carter.
The Funeral will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Walls Baptist Church. The Rev. David Philbeck and Rev. Kenneth Kanipe will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Bright Mode, age 96, of Mooresboro, died Sunday, July 22, 2018 at White Oak Manor.

Born January 22, 1922 in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Bright and Lilly Jones Bright.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Thomas Voyd Mode; son, Tom Mode Jr.; granddaughter, Kimberly Mode; and nine brothers and sisters

Those left to cherish her memory include one granddaughter, Crystal Smith; two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Smith and Amber Smith. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Tim Frazier officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Thelma Mode Martin, age 91, of Forest City, died Saturday, July 21, 2018 at her residence.

Born June 11, 1927 in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Mode and Alice Hollifield Mode.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Martin; three brothers and one sister.

Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Connie Wooten and husband Edward of Atlanta, Georgia; one son, Ronnie Martin of Forest City; three grandchildren, David Martin, Colin Martin, Lara Oldenburg and husband John. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Ava Martin.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ernie Cole officiating. Interment will follow the service at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Reverend Roger Hudgins, age 80, of Rutherfordton, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.

Born October 26, 1937 in Rutherford County, he was the son of Zeb Hudgins and Lula Gibbs Hudgins. He worked for Henson’s Trucking Company for fifteen years and served as pastor and associate pastor of several local churches. He years of pastoring included Sulphur Springs Congregational Holiness Church for ten years and Faith Temple of Spindale for five years. He currently has been serving as the associate pastor of Spindale Fellowship Holiness Church for the past twenty-seven years. Roger was called “Paw Paw” by all the children of the church and everyone knew him as the “Candy Man.”  He also enjoyed rabbit hunting. He loved his Lord, his Family and his Church Family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by two brothers, Hubert Hudgins and Ernest Hudgins a sister, Lucy Hodge and one great-grandson, Landon Monteith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Patricia Hudgins; one son, Jimmy Ray Hudgins; daughter, Renee Monteith and husband, Randy all of Rutherfordton; brother, Wesley Hudgins and wife, Lena of Rutherfordton and a sister, Betty Wilson and husband, Morris of Forest City. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Savannah Bailey, Brooke Monteith Hargett (Tyler), Jonathan Monteith; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Bailey, Hayden Bailey and his church family who loved him dearly.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Spindale Fellowship Holiness Church with Reverend Leon Brown and Reverend Brian Bowlin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Reverend Chad Sisk and Reverend Buddy Campbell conducting the graveside service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
