The NC Judicial Branch issued a Rutherford County advisory this morning. All court court sessions have been postponed until 2 p.m. due to a bomb threat. Doors to the courthouse will reopen at 1:30 p.m. Jury will report 1:30 p.m.
The Courthouse personnel went through their protocol of checking for unusual packages or persons in their area, notifying the administrative office of the courts, and evacuating the building. Clerk of Court Steve Owens reported that everyone reacted calmly. (Story continues below.)
According to Owens, both Rutherford Police Department and Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department responded to the called-in threat. An SBI bomb-sniffing dog was brought in to search all areas of the building, but did not alert in any area.
Owens also mentioned that courthouse personnel had recently undergone training in case of an event such as this. Law enforcement complimented Owens on the precautions and procedures the staff had taken.
Sheriff Chris Francis had not returned our calls for comment prior to publication. The Sheriff’s Department is responsible for courthouse security.
