POLK COUNTY, N.C. — Polk County commissioners ratified a letter to the DOT last Monday requesting that the proposed highway 108 widening project be canceled.
The project of widening of the road between Tryon and Columbus had already been reduced from four lanes to three. However, local opposition from business owners and residents continues.
The D.O.T. project would use eminent domain to seize businesses, homes and property to make room for two lanes with an expanded shoulder and an additional turn lane in some areas.
The NCDOT cited expected increases in traffic and lack of safe shoulder space for its reason to improve the road.
