RALEIGH — Gov. Roy Cooper nominated Chief District Court Judge Athena Brooks to serve the state as Special Superior Court judge. She was chosen to fill a vacancy created May 16.
Brooks, a Buncombe County native and resident of Hendersonville, has served on the bench in Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties since 2004. She was graduated from UNC-Asheville and the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law, and a major in the US. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
Cooper said. “I’m grateful for these individuals’ willingness to assume this important responsibility for the State of North Carolina.”
In a letter delivered today, Gov. Cooper submitted the nominee for confirmation by the General Assembly. By state statute, the General Assembly must confirm the nominees by joint resolution of both chambers.
