Murder suspect makes first appearance in court Friday

RUTHERFORDTON — Jason Daniel Butler, 45, was wheeled into the courtroom accompanied by several officers on Friday to make his first appearance before Judge Rob Martelle. Butler faces murder charges in the death of Michael Splawn who died at his 1037 Chase High Road residence.

Travelers Rest, SC officers in responding to a disturbance at the drive-thru of Chick-fil-A, found Butler emotionally distressed and holding a gun to his head. Butler reported he committed a crime in North Carolina.

Butler will be assigned an attorney to be named from the Office of Indigent Defense Services. He remains in jail without bond.
