Firearm, drugs and wanted man found at license checkpoint

Deputy Steven McPeters of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 29-year-old John Lee Anstead, of 449 Church St. in Marion, with possession of a firearm by a felon; 20-year-old Scottie Alan Keith Frady, of 4136 Valley Trail in Morganton, with possession of drug paraphernalia; and 27-year-old Gerald Riley Stout Jr., of 779 Deacon Drive in Marion, with possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon.

At 12:45 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, McPeters, along with other sheriff’s deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers, conducted a license checkpoint at the intersection of U.S. 70 East and Harmony Grove Road.

A vehicle neared the checkpoint and abruptly stopped. Officers approached the vehicle and found Anstead, Frady and Stout inside with Anstead driving.

Deputies saw a handgun in plain sight under the driver’s seat and learned that Anstead had outstanding warrants for breaking and entering a motor vehicle and larceny. He was taken into custody for those offenses.

A further search turned up a stun gun on Stout and drug paraphernalia in the back seat where Frady and Stout were sitting.
