WILDCAT FALLS, SC — The coroner’s office was notified just before 1 p.m. Friday of a death at Wildcat Falls on Greer Highway in northern Greenville County. The 18-year-old was killed when a 1,000 pound boulder rolled over him. Greenville County Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis said Ellis said four people from Florida went hiking at Wildcat Falls around 11 a.m. Friday.
The four climbed partially up the falls when an 18-year-old man went about 30 yards ahead of his friends to a boulder. Speculation is that the young man had used a crevice in the rock as a handhold. He was on the boulder when it separated from the earth and rolled over him. The boulder was about 1,000 pounds and about the size of an SUV. Ellis said the teen died from blunt force trauma.
There are signs posted not to climb on the rocks.
