COLUMBUS, N.C. — Patrick James Coggins, 23, was arrested in Polk County, North Carolina, Friday. Coggins is a suspect in a fatal shooting of a man in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Deputies responded to California Avenue around 1:45 p.m. Friday after a report of a shooting was made. Upon arrival deputies found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Terry Steven Whiteside, Junior, 38, was taken to the hospital and died in surgery at 2:38 p.m. Whiteside suffered gunshots to his torso.
A woman at the scene when the shooting happened, gave deputies details of the incident, the suspect’s name and a description of the vehicle he left in. A local and regional broadcast was sent to law enforcement agencies and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspect’s vehicle in a grocery store parking lot.
Polk County deputies arrested Patrick James Coggins without incident and notified the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. Coggins has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
