Obituaries

Ethel Chaney Hudlow of Forest City passed away January 5, 2018 at Hospice House.  She was a born in Suffolk Virginia.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband Hayden, daughter Janice (Ron) Chamberlain of Rocky Mount, NC, sons Hayden (Belinda) Hudlow of Forest City and David Hudlow of Hagerstown, Maryland.  Ethel is also survived by her grandchildren Samuel Holmes, Steven Holmes, Janis Bryant, Shanon Brower, Lynn Warlick, Dana Friedman, Dawn Watson and Kimberley Hudlow.  She also has sixteen great grandchildren, a sister and three brothers.

 Memorial services will be held on Sunday January 7, 2018, 3PM at Smith Grove Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Terry White officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

 Brenda Cole Metcalf age 77 of Bechtler Drive, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

A native of Rutherford County she is the daughter of the late Lance and Lois Houser Cole. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Alan Metcalf.

Brenda is survived by her husband Jack Metcalf, two daughters –  Karen Metcalf and Sherri Splawn, as well as a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Friday January 12, 2018 at Crestview Baptist Church 630 South Church Street, Forest City, NC 28043 with Rev. Kevin Rohm and Rev. Tony Hardin officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 – 2 PM Friday January 12, 2018 at Crestview Baptist Church. A private burial will be held at Spindale City Cemetery,

Mr. Randall Wayne Johnson, age 65, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at his home. A native of Greenwood, SC he is a son of the late Graham Louis and Lois Hicks Johnson.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Johanna Franks and her husband Travis, one granddaughter Willow Franks, one son Anthony Fortner, one brother Richard Johnson and wife Nona, one step brother Charlie Hopper, step sister Teresa Flack and a stepmother Lucy Mae Johnson and a number of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother Perry Johnson.

A celebration of life will be held 1 PM Sunday January 7, 2018 at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel.

Bobby Howe, age 53, of Forest City, NC, formerly of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the Mission Hospital in Asheville.
     Born August 1, 1964 in Lancaster County, PA, he was the son of Robert Eugene Howe, Sr. and Laura Harsh Howe who both reside in Lancaster. Bobby worked as a truck driver for Republic Services and most recently for J B Russell Trucking. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed attending car shows, trips to the beach and having cookouts with friends and family.
     In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Melissa Howe; daughter, Kandi Santiago and husband, Emmanuel of Spindale, NC; son, Robert Howe of Lancaster; one brother, Bryan Howe of Lancaster and a sister, Shyla Baldwin and husband, Terry of Ft. Collins, Colorado. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Dezmin Santiago, Elias Santiago, and Kaleigha Howe.
     A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Lancaster and will be announced by Harrelson Funeral Home.


Ruth Evelyn Kornacki, age 97, of Rutherfordton, died Friday, January 5, 2018, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home.

She was a native of Michigan and the daughter of the late Angus Edward McKinnon and the late Jenny Olsen Peterson. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Ruth was a great story teller, had a great sense of humor and had a great essence for life.

She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Andrew Kornacki, four sisters; Arlene Reynolds, Laura Pearson, Katherine Macker and Adeline McKinnon and two brothers; Eddie McKinnon and Johnny McKinnon.

She is survived by:

Sandy DeWolf and husband Dale of Rutherfordton
Deanna Blakley and husband Larry of Stuart, FL

One Half Brother:
Arnold McKinnon of California

Three Great-Great-Grand Children

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 7, 2018 at McMahan’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at McMahan’s Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 7, 2018 with Deacon Andy Cilone officiating.

Entombment will take place at the Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Activity Dept at White Oak Manor of Rutherfordton at 188 Oscar Justice Rd. Rutherfordton, NC 28139 or to The American Heart Association at 7272 Greenville Ave. Dallas, TX 75231.
