NC Highway Patrol trooper injured when rammed by stolen van

A  juvenile stole his mother’s van from the Kmart on Patton Avenue around 11:20 a.m. on Friday. He then drove onto I-40 East out of Asheville. The North Carolina Highway Patrol later confirmed a van was stolen by a juvenile. Troopers attempted a rolling stop when they say the juvenile rammed a NCHP vehicle and one other car.

A state trooper was transported to Mission Hospital with significant injuries. The juvenile was not injured and is now in custody.

There was a detour in place for travelers on I-40 E after the wreck that lasted until I-40 finally reopened around 3:30 p.m.

The driver of a third vehicle was not injured and left the scene.
