Yoshie Hirabiyashi Powell, born January 12, 1930, passed away November 4, 2017 at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC. Born in Yokosuka, Japan, Yoshie was the daughter of the late Yoshio and Toyo Hirabiyashi and wife of the late Joseph Aden Powell.

Yoshie completed her high school education in Japan. After graduating from high school, Yoshie worked on a United States Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan. It was there she met her late husband Joseph Aden Powell and learned English. Yoshie and Joseph came back to the states where they later had two children: Gregory and Gary Powell. After Joe completed his time with the US Navy, Yoshie and Joe settled down in Ellenboro, NC. Yoshie became a seamstress for Doncaster, and later retired from there.

Yoshie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Powell; her father, Yoshio Hirabiyashi; her mother, Toyo Hirabiyashi; and her sister Hanae Toyama. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Gregory Makoto Powell and wife Gina Powell; her son Gary Masao Powell and wife Bridgette Powell; her granddaughter Elisha Weld and husband Chris Weld; her granddaughter Jeanna Johnson and husband Robert Johnson; her grandson Jonathan Powell and fiancé Rosie Jackson; her granddaughter Victoria Powell; great granddaughters, Elora Weld, Elena Weld, and Aniya Powell; and great grandsons Aden Powell and Joseph Powell; her niece Miyoshi Toyama; her nephew Takashi; and her brother in law, Harutoshi Toyama.

She will be missed the most for her amazing food, her uncanny ability to say the most improper thing at the most perfect time, and for always giving her heart and her time to her family and friends. She lived a beautiful life, and experienced some amazing adventures.

“It isn’t the date on either end that counts, but how they used their dash, for that dash between the dates represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.”

Graveside services will be held 3PM Sunday November 12, 2017 at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery 479 Main Street, Ellenboro, NC 28040.

Shreeji Vijay Patel the infant son of Vijay and Karuna Patel of Bostic passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Rutherford Regional Hospital.

He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Dipak and Divya Patel and paternal grandparents, Kanti and Lalita Patel all of India.

A private burial will be conducted in the Akshardham Cemetery.

Gary Horne, age 65, of Spartanburg, SC, died October 28, 2017 at the Hospice House in Forest City.

He was born November 18, 1951 in Spartanburg County, SC and is survived by one sister-in-law, Nicole Parris.

No formal services will be conducted.

Richard Barry Davis, 64, of Fletcher, died Monday, November 6, 2017 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late J.C. and Julia Griffin Davis. Barry was a graduate of east Rutherford High School, Appalachian State University and Gaston County Medical Transport Paramedic School.

He became interested in the field of rescue and EMS in his junior year in high school earning his First Aide certification and volunteering with the Forest City Rescue Squad. In 1974 he became one of the first EMT’s in the state of North Carolina. In 1986 he was one of the first paramedics for Gaston Emergency Medical Services and in 1988 he was recruited to be the EMS director for Rutherford County. Over the next several years he received training from North Carolina Emergency Management Agency and UNC-Charlotte where he received his Emergency Management Certificate. His job title later changed to Emergency Services Director.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan Delane Marsh; one sister Amy Davis Hudson of Forest City; one niece, one nephew, and two grand nieces.

A visitation will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Crowe’s Mortuary from 2PM until 4PM.

MOORESBORO- James Ray McCraw, 82, went home to the Lord Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby, NC. He was the son of the late James Jolley McCraw and Molly Padgett.

PRECEDED: In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife Floy Icenhower McCraw, a son Randy McCraw, daughters Lori Hargett and Donna Sessoms.

SURVIVORS: Left to cherish his memories are three sons Jimmy McCraw, Ronnie McCraw and wife Kathy, and Steven Lee McCraw; one daughter Asia Royal; two brothers Donald McCraw and Romeo McCraw; four sisters June Stitzel, Audrey Self, Sandy Godfrey and Linda Silvers plus 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 6p.m. until 8p.m at Eggers Funeral Home in Cliffside, NC. Funeral service will be held Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 3 p.m. at State Line Baptist Church 1328 State Line Road, Gaffney, SC 29341.

Mr. Charles W. “Buck” Whisnant passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills in Forest City, NC. He was born October 15, 1926 in Polkville, NC , to Annie Pendelton Whisnant and Hubert E. Whisnant. His family moved to Six Points a few years later. He attended Ellenboro High School and then joined the U.S. Navy. He started barbering while he was a Seaman First Class in the Navy from November 1944 to July 1946, but was best known for his barber shop at Six Points from 1947 to 1991 with hundreds of very loyal customers over those 44 years.

Buck was a hard-working business man who seemed to never stop working, but he also found plenty of things to enjoy, such as his garden and “famous” tomatoes, hunting and fishing, and boating and skiing at Lake James where he spent years of summer weekends with his family and best friends, Bill and Sara Causby. He also loved spending time at the family beach house at Surfside Beach.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Wynelle Greene Whisnant, and their triplett infants born in 1949; his parents and his brothers, Carol Whisnant, Herman Whisnant, H. E. (Hugh) Whisnant; sister, Nell Whisnant Willis.

He is survived by son, Charles Kimball Whisnant and wife Teri; daughters, Tracy Whisnant Davis and husband Steve, Pamela Whisnant Harrill and husband Tony, and Dianne Whisnant Lurie and husband David; grandchildren, Adam Lurie; Jay Lurie and wife, Brittney; Tyler Harrill and wife , Anna; Rebecca Whisnant; Lauren Whisnant, Paul Davis; great-grandchildren, Aiden Lurie, Wilkin Lurie, Sawyer Harrill, Tucker Harrill, and brothers, Robert Joseph Whisnant, Phillip Donald Whisnant and wife, Kay, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and his close friend, Helen Bushong.

The funeral service will be held at three o’clock Saturday in the Race Path Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Bobby Gantt, Reverend John Godfrey and Reverend Randall Cooper officiating. Visitation will be in the Sanctuary from 1 until 2:45 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

CMSAF (Ret.) Bill Duckworth, age 68, of Mooresboro, NC, died Friday, November 3, 2017 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Born April 25, 1949 in Mecklenburg County, NC, he was a son to the late Harold Duckworth and Elizabeth Jenkins Duckworth. He was a graduate of Clover Park High School and received a Masters Degree from Webster University. Bill was veteran of the United States Air Force and earned the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm and honorably retired after thirty years of service to his country.  Bill was a member of Beaver Baptist Church and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He was an avid golfer, but his life’s passion was his family. He loved them dearly and was loved by all who knew him. Bill was also known for his generous heart toward others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, David Wayne Duckworth.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of forty-six years, Dianna Duckworth; son, William A Duckworth of Hickory; two brothers, Danny Duckworth and wife, Patty of Lincolnton and Ronnie Duckworth of Fayetteville, NC; one sister, Gail Bianco of Fuquay-Varina, NC. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Rya and Brenna Duckworth.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Beaver Dam Baptist Church with Reverend Joe Edwards and Mr. Tom Runyon officiating. Interment will follow in Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.

FOREST CITY- Alvin Britt Holland, Jr., 57, went to be with our Lord on Sunday November 5, 2017 from his residence. A native of Rutherford county, he was born September 20, 1960, son of the late Alvin Britt Holland, Sr. and Margaret Ann LePage.
