Joe William Street, 66, of Rutherfordton, died Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late William Henry and Grace Irene Russ Street. Joe served in the Merchant Marines.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Betty Allison of Rutherfordton and Reba Keller of Rutherfordton, and brother, Michael Street of Rutherfordton.
Visitation will be held 3PM Saturday, Nov. 4 at Crowe’s Mortuary.

Mr. Leslie Owen Scoggin, age 70 of Spindale, NC went to be with The Lord on Friday October 27, 2017 while being cared for at The Charles George Veterans Medical Center in Asheville, NC.
A native of Rutherford County, Leslie served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, was a member of Spencer Baptist Church and was retired from Mastercraft. Leslie had a love for education and was a lifelong student, receiving various degrees including a degree in Marine Biology from Berea College in Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hullan Paul Scoggin and Mattie Lee Barnes Scoggin and one brother Hullan Howard Scoggin.
He is survived by one brother Guy Scoggin and wife Ruby of West Columbia, SC; one nephew Tony Scoggin and wife Susan and their children Tyler, Nikki, Adrian, and Madeline; one niece Christy Scoggin and her children Amber Gunn and Nick Gunn, special friends Wayne and Candy Ruppe, Dan and Iris McGuinn. Leslie also leaves to cherish his memory a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday October 30, 2017 at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel, 118 US Hwy 74A Rutherfordton, NC 28139. Interment will be in the Spindale City Cemetery with military honors provided by The Rutherford County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.

Mrs. Nancy Hodge Nix age 81 of Piney Knob Road passed away Friday October 27, 2017 at her home. A native of Rutherford County she is the daughter of the late George Robert Hodge, Sr. and Thelma Roberts Hodge. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Michael Nix.
Nancy was a retired Registered Nurse having worked at Rutherford Hospital and was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Rutherfordton, NC.
She is survived by one brother George Hodge, Jr. of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Hubert Dean “Koon” Burgess, age 78, of Francis Drive, Forest City, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1939 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Clarence Lee Burgess and Emma Ruth Gilbert Burgess. He was veteran of the U.S. Army and own and operated local service stations. Hubert also worked for Cone Mills-Avondale and as a plumber for Bill Childers. Among his life’s enjoyments were dancing and shooting pool. He was a faithful participant at the Rutherford County Senior Center and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann “Tootsie” Burgess; daughter, Denise Ann Burgess Stacey and sister, Sybil Arrowood.
Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Bobby Dean Burgess of Cliffside; brother, Bob Burgess and wife, Bertha of Caroleen; sister, Jeretha Reid of Lucas, NC; two granddaughters, Ashley Dawn Wilson (Brandon Davis) of Forest City and Amy Pruett (Philip) of Rutherfordton. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Dallas, Heath, Zaylee, Karsyn, Penelope, Harper and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ernie Cole officiating. Interment will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

She was the daughter of the late Claude Rhom and the late Joney Arrowood Rhom and she was a native of McDowell County. Myrtle was first married to the late Edward Rumfelt and then married to the late Charles Weeks. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Nebo. She was formerly from Rutherfordton. She was preceded in death by two daughters; Wanda (Susie) Marr and Mary Lou Jaynes; three brothers Howard, Bud and Toby Rhom; one sister Geneva Watkins and three grandsons.
