LAKE LURE, N.C. — Jailen Laquan Bowers was arrested on Sunday night for standing and walking down the center of Hwy 74 near Lake Lure. Several drivers concerned about the man’s safety stopped at the Bills Creek station to report the incident.
The 911 operators and responding law enforcement officers worked quickly to learn the identity of the subject. The young man had been reported as possibly having social and mental disorders and hearing loss. The officers were informed the man read lips and would most likely run if approached. The teamwork of the first responders, telecommunicators, family and passersbys brought a compassionate appropriate response.
Bowers was taken for evaluation before being charged with impeding traffic by sitting, standing, or lying in the road and resisting arrest.
