Shots fired at Gardner-Webb — Updated 4:45 a.m.

BOILING SPRINGS — Multiple people are detained and one armed suspect is on the run after a shootout at the Gardner Web campus Wednesday night. Gardner-Webb University campus police chief Barry Johnson said two people were shooting at each other with three additional people inside a suspect vehicle.

None of the suspects were current Gardner-Webb University students. No one is currently under arrest, but a formal arrest is expected of one of the shooters. Another shooting suspect is on the run.

The investigation is ongoing. No drugs and no additional weapons were found.

The shooting occurred on the back of the campus in the apartment section.

Gardner-Webb is affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Its 225-acre (.09 square kilometers) campus is located 52 miles (83 kilometers) west of Charlotte.

The campus was placed on “shelter-in-place” lockdown for hours. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
