This month at Polk County Public Libraries…

An all ages Rock Painting Party will be held at the Saluda Library on Tuesday, Sept 5 at 4pm. Join the rock hunting craze! Come paint rocks to hide around Polk County – or take them home to put in your own garden. All materials will be provided.

Do you know how to play chess? Players of all ages and experience ranges are invited to join the Foothills Chess Club at the Columbus Library on Mondays from 12:30-4pm. Learn the basics and then challenge yourself by playing with someone new!

Have a computer question? Need help with e-books and e-audiobooks? Stumped by your new smartphone? We’re here for you! We provide free one-on-one Book-A-Tech sessions for your technology questions.  We can help with basic computer questions; downloading library e-books and e-audiobooks to your e-reader, tablet, or other device; using an iPad, Kindle, tablet, or smartphone; setting up an email, Facebook, Skype; or other account; and addressing other specific technology-related questions. Baby Bookworms

Babies and toddlers up to 24 months old will enjoy books, songs, and playtime with special sensory toys.

Rising Readers

Children ages 2-5 will enjoy books, songs, and a special themed craft or activity.

Preschoolers to 5th graders can enjoy fun, free activities every week!
Sept 6LEGO Batman Movie
Watch the movie and play with LEGOs! Popcorn and drinks will be served.
Sept 13Bottlecap Art
Make a masterpiece with plastic bottlecaps. All materials will be provided.
Sept 20Nintendo Wii U
Play fun games like Mario Kart on the big screen!
Sept 27Fairy Gardens
Use your imagination to create a fairy garden in a basket. All materials will be provided.

Teen Scene
6th to 12th graders can enjoy fun, free activities every week!

Sept 11: Grill & Chill
Enjoy food, music, and games outside! Come prepared to get wet with water balloons.
Sept 18: Slime Time
Learn how to make glow-in-the-dark slime in this gooey program.
Sept 25: Movie Matinee
We are Groot! Stop by the library after school to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Sept 7Nachos & Nintendo
Enjoy an afternoon of Nintendo Wii U free play and competition against your friends. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
Sept 14: Movie Matinee
It’s morphin time! Stop by the library after school to watch Power Rangers. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.
Sept 21Vintage Vinyl Art & Nintendo
Learn how to make a bowl and other artwork from vintage vinyl records. Bring your own record or use one provided by the library.
Sept 28Hour of Code
A one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code” and show that anybody can learn the basics.

Saluda Teen Advisory Group
1st Wednesdays @ 4pm, Saluda Library
Join S.T.A.G. and have a say in what the library offers for teens! Members will be able to offer suggestions for future teen programs, materials, and spaces. The next meeting is on Sept 6.

Adult Programs
Body & Spirit Aerobics
Thursdays @ 10am, Columbus Library
Lorna Dever will lead this new weekly exercise class using Body & Spirit Aerobics videos by Dick Nunez of the Black Hills Health and Education Center. Each session lasts for 30 minutes and is designed for all ages and fitness levels. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water and a hand towel with you to class.

Aromatherapy Workshop  
Friday, Sept 22 @ 12pm, Saluda Library  
Learn about essential oils with local certified aromatherapist and owner of Juniper Jade Essentials, Amanda Edwards. At this hands-on workshop, participants will learn basic information about aromatherapy and make bath salts to take home.

Adult Craft Class
1st Fridays @ 4pm, Columbus Library
2nd Mondays @ 2pm, Saluda Library

This month, we will make book page necklaces and magnets! Learn how to make a unique accessory that shows off your love for reading. All materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own accent beads and needle-nose pliers to this event on Sept 1 and Sept 11.

Pushing the Limits
Tuesday, Sept 19 @ 6pm, Columbus Library
Join us for a new interactive adult book club and discussion group! We will discuss When the Killing’s Done by T.C. Boyle and learn about and meet birds of prey native to our area with Emily Walker, Chimney Rock Park naturalist. A free copy of the book will be given to the first 15 participants to sign up. Color Me Happy
2nd Wednesdays @ 5:30pm, Columbus Library
Enjoy a relaxing evening of adult coloring on Sept 13. No artistic experience required! Bring your own art supplies or choose to use the library’s coloring pages and colored pencils.

Cookbook Club
3rd Thursdays @ 12pm, Columbus Library
Each month will challenge you to create a themed dish to share with friends at a potluck lunch. Sept 21 is our Chili Cookoff! Bring a pot of chili or something to go with it, such as cornbread. Prizes will be awarded for the best traditional, best vegetarian, and most unique chilis!

Team Trivia Night
3rd Fridays @ 6pm, Black Coffee
Gather your friends and head to Black Coffee in Tryon for a fun night of team trivia on Sept 15. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams. This month’s theme is “Back to School”… Study up on your reading, writing, and arithmetic!
