Chimney Rock Park improvements mean late opening on July 25

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — Chimney Rock State Park will have a late opening on July 25 so that a helicopter can assist with the capital improvement project on the Outcroppings Trail. The front gate will reopen at noon.

The Rumbling Bald Climbing Area at 827 Boys Camp Road in Lake Lure will be open all day for hiking and rock climbing on this day.

*The date is subject to change. Please check back to CRP website for updates..

Other major improvements include:

  • A larger deck is being installed by Outcroppings Trail to provide guests with a new vision of the park. Park superintendent James Ledgerwood said the project should be complected around Labor Day.
  • The Skyline Trail, which has been closed to the public since 2008, will reopen  next month and allow access to the top of Hickory Nut Falls.”

The biggest project for the park, though, is the elevator system, parts of which are being updated and replaced. Recently, the elevator’s 12,000 pound motor was flown out by helicopter. A replacement one was flown in.

The Skylounge is also closed because of construction work. The park has placed fans, drinking fountains and a concession stand on the deck area for the public. There are no restrooms near the Chimney area. The park hopes to have the elevator up and running by the end of the year.
