The official kick-off to the STEP (Small Town Economic Prosperity ) program to Rutherfordton began Friday at 5:30 pm on the courthouse lawn. Friends, citizens, volunteers, and politicians all gathered to begin the process of collaborating on a plan for economic prosperity for Rutherfordton.
The Ole 74 Jazz Band played from the courthouse steps to a vibrant crowd. Residents and friends of Rutherfordton had the opportunity to provide input to the needs of the town as well as meet those spearheading the project. Chilton Rodgers from the North Carolina Rural Center serves as the coach for the process. Cindy Adair of the Town of Rutherfordton and RTR staff coordinates the meetings for Rutherfordton.
The crowd enjoyed hamburgers and hot dogs, cobbler, cookies, music and a children’s inflated castle all as part of the outdoor activities. As Mayor Dancy decreed, the rain stopped by 4 PM.
Those who attended the formal training for the STEP process are: Cindy Adair, Sallie Cowan, Doug Grondahl, Frankie McWhorter (for John McWhorter), Mayor Jimmy Dancy, and Town Manager Karen Andrews.
