Chapter 51-1 Of North Carolina General Statutes states that a valid marriage is between a male and a female who take each other as husband and wife. Further, 51-1-2 deems all marriages between individuals of the same gender as being invalid.

Since same sex marriage is already illegal in the state, isn’t this amendment unnecessary?
