(SPINDALE) The first day of voting brought out 260 voters as of 4 PM. It also brought out the dirty tricks department. A campaign volunteer was handing out a sample ballot with Julius Owens name checked as to show how to vote for him. The name of clerk of court candidate AMANDA DAVIS had been marked out (see copy below) and the volunteer was insinuating that Ms. Davis had dropped out of the race. The form was created by Keith Hunter Jr. The bottom of the form was marked AUTHORIZED BY JULIUS OWENS with the incomplete disclosure of PAID FOR BY _________________________. Another addition to the form highlighted the candidates Keith Hunter Jr wanted to endorse.
Ms. Davis, when made aware of these actions, filed a complaint with the Board of Elections. Debbie Bedford of the Board of Elections instructed Keith Hunter Jr. not to give out any forms or sample ballot facsimile with names marked out or to insinuate that a candidate had dropped out of the clerk of court race.
“I have NOT dropped out of the clerk of court race and have no intention of it. I will be the next Clerk of Court. How can the citizens of Rutherford County expect me to fight for them if I won’t fight for myself,” Amanda Davis said.
Julius Owens did not return our call by press time.
