Rutherfordton budget presented at Town Council meeting

RUTHERFORDTON — Town manager Doug Barrick presented a recommended budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 at last week’s Town Council meeting. The balanced budget does not include a recommended tax increase, but stays at the rate of $.0567 per $100 valuation.

The Sewer Enterprise fund will not necessitate a sewer rate increase. All full-time staff will receive a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).

Among the items in the Town of Rutherfordton budget are:

  • SCBA, Self-contained Breathing Apparatus, gear for the Rutherfordton Fire and Rescue
  • body armor equipment for the Rutherfordton Police Dept.
  • replacement of MACBooks at Norris Library, and a
  • dump truck for the Public Works Department.

While police, fire and public works take up a large percentage of the budget, there are some improvements to the community forecasted as well:

  • the move of Public Works facilty on N. Washington St.
  • commission of Rutherfordton history book
  • creating a Kiwanis Park master plan
  • sidewalk improvements
  • demolition of some derelict and abandoned properties, and
  • continued support of the Purple Martin Greenway.

Town Council and Town Manager are looking for public feedback. The budget is available online and at Town Hall on Main Street, Rutherfordton.

A public hearing will be held at the June 7 Town Council meeting at the Picknic Shelter at the Purple Martin Greenway. The move of the meeting location will be in conjunction with Phase Two of the Purple Martin Greenway grand opening.
