Union Mills Post Office reopening process begins

UNION MILLS — An overflow crowd came to support a U.S. Post Office in Union Mills at Monday’s commissioner meeting. Kurtis Bullard of the USPS explained the process to re-open a facility within the community.

There WILL be a post office opening again in Union Mills. Thanks to all who showed up at the commissioners meeting. USPS real estate specialist Kurtis Ballard spoke at RC Commissioner meeting.

The process to reopen a facility could take one to two years according to Ballard. Already there have been searches for land in the area. The USPS requirements are approximately 20,000 sq. feet of usable land, and/or an existing 700 sq.ft. building, have suitable zoning and meet federal handicapped accessibility within the building. In 2015, the Union Mills Post Office closed abruptly due to mold in the building that could cause health and safety issues. Mail is currently routed through Rutherfordton which causes inconvenience to businesses and residents who must now “go to town” for their postal needs.

The large Union Mills crowd present to hear and meet Bullard gave him indication of the great desire for them to have their post office back.
