Speaker Tim Moore hired as Cleveland County attorney
Not without controversy however
CLEVELAND COUNTY – Speaker Tim Moore was recently hired as the county attorney for neighboring Cleveland County. As county attorney, Moore will advise the Cleveland County commissioners and represent the county in any legal action. According to the Charlotte Observer, Moore’s contract is for $25,000 annual retainer and $250 per hour.
Longtime county attorney Bob Yelton served 32 years of service in the position before Moore’s recent appointment. Yelton wrote a letter criticizing the hiring of Moore citing:
- Moore’s elected position as Speaker of the House in Raleigh keeps him away from the community and may place an excessive burden on the local assistant
- Moore had been vying for the job over the past 6 months
- Nepotism between Moore and Commissioner chair Jason Falls who are first cousins, once removed.
Falls didn’t recuse himself from the hiring process.
“It’s not a close family relationship,” Falls said in the Charlotte Observer article. “It’s not something that anybody would see as a conflict.”
State ethics laws define familial conflicts as those actions taken that directly benefit the public official or the official’s spouse. More information on the Cleveland County commissioners can be found here.
