Dirty Dancing Festival kicks off with a roar!
LAKE LURE- The 5th annual Dirty Dancing Festival kicked off in Lake Lure Friday night with the free outdoor showing of the movie in the Meadows. Hundreds of people where set up with their chairs and picnic supplies as early as 4 p.m. for the 8:30 p.m. movie.
Families, groups of friends and dancing devotees were all eagerly the annual kick off of the festival. The weather cooperated with slightly overcast skies and a wonderful breeze in the air. The music was pure magic and people were dancing all over the meadows awaiting the start of the film on the large outdoor screen.
The only drawback was the number of food vendors but the returning crowd seemed to be prepared for this as the number of picnickers were greatly increased this year. Blankets and food was everywhere from sandwiches to buckets of fried chicken.
Once the sun sunk down behind the mountain the movie started with a great deal of interactive cheers, boos and clapping on favorite scenes. Rumbling Bald Resort had fireworks that were occasionally seen over the mountain behind the screen near the end of the movie. It was a great addition.
Big shout out to all the traffic control who got everyone parked without too much difficulty and all seemed to have a smile on their faces. Leaving was not bad and the trip back to Rutherfordton only took around 35 minutes.
All in all it was a great night. The festival continues all day Saturday with dance exhibitions and bands. Always a great time!
Looking forward to next year on the green at Lake Lure to once again hear Patrick Swayze say “No one puts Baby in the corner.”
