Town of Rutherfordton donates $50,000 to kickoff campaign

RUTHERFORDTON – KidSenses Interactive Children’s Museum is a destination spot in downtown Rutherfordton for families. Executive Director Willard Whitson gave a presentation at Wed. night’s Rutherfordton Town Council meeting on the growth plans for the museum to reach out to the “tween” demographic with the creation of The Factory.


Whitson explained that KidSenses’ current audience consists primarily of families with children, from infants to age ten. With the proposed expansion, provisionally entitled “The Factory – A Place to Meet and Make,” Whitson hopes to attract young people from age eleven to fifteen and on up into the teens and beyond, including adults.

“The Factory” will have a variety of hands on activities similar to the kinds of “maker space” programs that are proliferating in museums around the country. Their goal is to keep this new audience meaningfully engaged by stimulating their curiosity and encouraging them to develop skills and interests that will lead them to higher education, and career paths in an increasingly tech-based economy. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) themes will pervade.

There is also a desire to have additional space for demonstrations, lectures, town meetings and programs, as well as room to host traveling exhibits on a wide variety of topics — from dinosaurs, to Star Wars, to Nascar. Longer range, KidSenses wishes to work with the town to create a parking deck in the lot behind the museum and create a large scale indoor/outdoor destination experience which would connect to activities within the museum itself.
