Defiant Whiskey recreates girl scout camp into event venue
BOSTIC, NC – What do whisky and campgrounds have in common? A lot in Golden Valley, N.C. Tucked away between the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains and South Mountains is Camp Golden Valley, a recently closed Girl’s Scout Camp that is now owned by the makers of Defiant Whisky.
After decades as a well-known, private youth camp, this 550-acre wonderland spanning three mountain ridges is now open for public rentals for weddings, events and group gatherings. The natural amenities rival those of any popular destinations in western North Carolina and include a 15-acre, spring-fed lake, multiple hiking trails and incredible mountain views.
Upon its grand opening in May, patrons to the camp can enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, canoeing, catch and release fishing, billiards, corn hole, bocce ball, four tennis courts, one basketball court and even an indoor 16-foot movie screen.
Lodging options are plenty and varied at Camp Golden Valley including enclosed, rustic cabins, screened-in cabins, treetop cabins (the most unique way to camp anywhere) and enough tent camping for 250. With all lodging combined, the camp can accommodate about 325 overnight guests. Throughout each of the cabin sites, campers have full access to fire pits, covered pavilions and old-school shower/bathhouses.
Tim Ferris, owner and operator of Defiant Whisky (which is made 2.7 miles from the camp), has big plans for Camp Golden Valley, which includes turning it into what he calls a “farm estate” style distillery.
“Camp Golden Valley is the future of Defiant Whisky,” said Ferris. “Not only do we want to invite groups and events to rent this incredible property, we also want to expand our whisky production here to possibly include a bottling house and second distilling operation.”
