There will be a special meeting held at 5 p.m. of the Rutherford County Airport Authority. The topic of discussion will be House Bill 492 . The Airport Authority, currently comprised of the sitting county commissioners, is expected to approve a resolution of support.
This legislative bill when passed will eliminate the current Airport Authority as a separate entity and places control of the airport totally in the county’s hands. The bill would give the Rutherford County Commission the authority to transfer all property owned by the Rutherford County Airport to the county.
The County Commissioners took over as the Airport Authority in 2014 following a land deal approved by the Authority that paid then-County Commission Chairman Julius Owens $300,000 for 10 acres of property adjacent to Marchman Field.
The measure, filed by House Majority Leader Mike Hager, R-Rutherford, would also allow the county to take over any contracts “to which the Authority is a party.” This would include any property contracts or hangar rental agreements.
If the Authority is terminated, the county can also operate the airport as “a public enterprise” under general statute.
At tonight’s meeting, public comments will be allowed and limited to five minutes. Any written comments submitted before the meeting will be copied and distributed to the Airport Authority.
The regularly scheduled monthly County Commission meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Rutherford County Office Building located at 289 N. Main Street, Rutherfordton.
Topics for discussion include Bond for County Manager, sale of county property, and appointments to the Transit authority. For the full agenda of both meetings click here.
The public is encouraged to attend and a live webcast of the meeting is available.
